Taiwan’s Foxconn to support students of 4 Indian universities hone Mandarin skills under project Kohinoor
These institutions are Shiv Nadar University, VEL TECH, Assam Don Bosco University and Karpagam Academy of Higher Education.
TAIPEI: Foxconn – the world’s biggest electronic components producer headquartered in Taipei, and a leading supplier for Apple iPhones has announced to support four Indian universities to skill their students with Mandarin language. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed between Foxconn India with four universities in India aimed to support them with Mandarin language teachers from Taiwan and teaching courses to cultivate future talents.
The MOU was signed with Shiv Nadar University, VEL TECH, Assam Don Bosco University and Karpagam Academy of Higher Education, with the support of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC), India. All the four universities have Taiwan Education Centers (TECs) set up by TECC at their campus with Taiwanese teachers providing language courses and scholarships.
Foxconn’s Project Kohinoor will invest INR 30 lakh to promote Mandarin language education through tripartite cooperation between industry, government and academia. Foxconn will sponsor relevant subsidies for TECs’ teachers during their teaching period in India. The Group will give priority consideration to qualified job seekers who have completed the courses under the project and passed certain level (band) of the TOCFL (Test of Chinese as Foreign Language).
Sponsoring Indian universities with Taiwan Education Centers (TECs) is Foxconn’s commitment to bring together industry, government and academia to strengthen Mandarin language teaching resources in India. The move helps local students develop superior language skills and responds to talent demand required for the Group’s strategic development in India going forward.
Director of Education Division, TECC, India Peters LY Chen, told reporter that he appreciated Foxconn’s sponsorship and pointed out that it would have more incentives for teachers to come to India from Taiwan, since most of teachers go to the US and European countries. The Kohinoor project is expected to expand and include more institutions which have Taiwan Education Center in the near future.

Dr Jose Palely, Vice Chancellor of Assam Don Bosco University, Prof. B Venkatachalapathi, Vice chancellor of Karpagam Academy of Higher Education, TN, Dr. Atul Mishra, Head – Department of International Relations and Governance Studies, Shiv Nadar University, and many faculty members participated in the virtual signing ceremony.
They said the cooperation will help students and faculty to polish their Mandarin language skill, as well as set them up for success job opportunities.
Foxconn recently announced investments in India worth US$1.6 billion to diversify away from China, and has been in constant quest to generate talent pool for its upcoming projects in India. Liu Young-way, the CEO of Foxconn, was recently chosen for the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour.
