MiB Secy meets Digital Media Orgns, OTT Operators to discuss TRAI recommendations, WJAI delivers key suggestions

On its way to finalsing the National Broadcasting Policy 2024, the Union I&B ministry is collecting suggestions from all stakeholders including Self-Regulatory Bodies (SRBs) such as Web Journalists Association of India (WJAI).

New Delhi: The union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting convened an important meeting Monday to invite suggestions from the Digital Media Associations and OTT operators to discuss TRAI’s recommendations on “lnputs for formulation of National Broadcasting Policy-2024. The country’s first and largest organization for digital media Web Journalists Association of India (WJAI) also submitted key inputs during the meeting.

The meeting was chaired by Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Director Neeraj Kumar and Deputy Director Smt. Deepali Sharma were also present in the meeting.

During this meeting the Secretary, MiB said that In pursuit of establishing India a global leader in the broadcasting sector, this policy intends to target broad roadmap for 10 years with special focus on the

next 5 years. The National Broadcasting Policy-2024, envisages to achieve 3 objectives: Propelling Growth, Promoting Content and Promoting Interests of the stakeholders and people at large.

In the meeting, Web Journalists Standards Authority (WJSA), the self-regulatory unit of Web Journalists Association of India (WJAI), was represented by its National Vice President Sanjeev K Ahuja. He advised the officials of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting that the government should work out a mechanism or formulate a policy or guidelines that should allow the people with requisite journalistic qualification  or background/experience to launch or run web news portals to justify their profession, and also the reputation of journalism is maintained.

Anand Kaushal, Senior journalist and President, WJAI, said that WJAI’s suggestion was appreciated by other representatives including the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. In the meeting, the Secretary also listened carefully to other suggestions of WJAI and assured to implement them.

The WJAI president said that Monday meeting was the first formal interaction the WJAI had with the top brass of the union ministry, and the WJAI looks forward to more such meetings with the officials of MiB and it would continue to contribute and give its input and suggestions for the formulation of National Broadcasting Policy and other initiatives in the future too.
