More Taiwan scholarships for Indian students as semiconductor industry heats up in India
As the Indo-Taiwan trade increased to almost USD 8.22 billion last year, Taiwan’s Scholarship for Indian students which started in 2004 with just 5 scholarships, has shot up to 137 students this year.
NEW DELHI/TAIPEI: A day before the earth-breaking ceremony (Bhumi Pujan) of India’s first semiconductor assembly & test facility by Tata Electronics in Assam, which works with Taiwan’s PSMC support, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India (TECC) distributed scholarships to 137 Indian students on August 2nd, 2024. This is a record breaking placements of scholarship offered by Taiwanese government to Indian students.
TECC, which is the representative office of the Taiwan Government in India promoting cultural and economic activities, hosted a grand award ceremony, celebrating the achievements of 137 Indian students who were awarded the 2024-2025 Taiwan Scholarship and Huayu Enrichment Scholarship.
A total of 92 students received the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship, which supports their pursuit of Mandarin language studies in Taiwan. Additionally, 45 students were awarded the Taiwan Scholarship, enabling them to pursue various degree programmes at Taiwanese universities.
Ambassador Baushuan Ger highlighted said, “India has become the largest pool of international students benefiting from Taiwan’s governmental scholarships, underscoring the growing academic ties between the two nations.”
Srishti, representative of Taiwan Scholarship recipients expressed her excitement and shared her experience when she was exchange student in Taiwan before. She was fully touched by the kindness of Taiwanese people. During her speech in the ceremony she again expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to study in Taiwan, looking forward to immersing herself in Taiwanese culture and contributing to the academic community there. This year’s awardees come from diverse academic backgrounds, reflecting the broad appeal and inclusivity of Taiwan’s scholarship programs.
Many students came along with parents, grandparents and friends, far away from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Mizoram and Himachal Pradesh. Director of Education Division, Peters Chen, congratulated on their achievements and encouraged the recipients to study harder and travel a lot to know more about Taiwan’s culture.
The Indo-Taiwan trade volume has increased from USD 2 billion in 2006 to almost USD 8.22 billion in 2023. The bilateral trade between India and Taiwan is on an upswing. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education launched the Taiwan Scholarship and Huayu Enrichment Scholarship program in 2004, starting at 5 placements for Indian students. It has been increased a lot in the recent years, particularly after the growth of trade relations and newly development of semiconductor industry cooperation. 77 students got Huayu Enrichment Scholarship in 2023, and the MOE Taiwan provided 92 places of this scholarship to Indian students this year.
Tata Electronics and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) works together to construct India’s first 12-inch semiconductor fab. This exemplifies the deepening industrial cooperation between our nations. To build a robust trade relation and semiconductor ecosystem in the future, it is more essential to cultivate more young talents in the related fields. Therefore, Taiwan considers educational collaboration a cornerstone of its efforts to embrace Indo-Taiwan relations, especially between institutions of higher education. Currently, 35 Taiwan Education Centers provide Taiwan’s Mandarin course in different universities in India. Many of recipients presented today have learned Mandarin language from Taiwan’s teacher in the Taiwan Education Center, where Taiwanese people truly meet up with Indian people and deeply connected.
