Tokyo Olympics: Japanese professors reach India to train Indian players, officials on Japanese etiquettes
NEW DELHI: A 5-member team of Japanese professors arrived in India on Wednesday to educate the Tokyo Summer Olympics 2020 bound Indian contingent about how to ‘behave’ in Japan during their stay there.
The team from Tsukuba International Academy for Sports Studies (TIAS), University of Tsukuba, Japan comprises one India-born professor too as the rest of them are Japanese nationals.
Known worldwide for its distinct Asian culture and values, Japan is hosting the 2020 Olympics in July-August.
The athletes and other officials accompanying them especially from developing countries are being made aware of the cultural and behavioral requirements such as how to greet the women, elders/seniors in Japanese style, bowing posture suits where, how to eat Japanese food, etc.
India’s youth affairs and sports minister Kiran Rijiju is likely to join one such session in New Delhi.
“Led by the TIAS Chairman Dr. Hisashi Sanada, the team of professors would hold two sessions for the Indian players as well as coaches, health experts and administrative staff on February 27 and 29 in India,” Dr. Randeep Rakwal, Professor, TIAS told Asian Community News (ACN) Network on arrival in India on February 19.
The team of professors has come to India on the invitation of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and Sports Authority of India (SAI) to sensitize the Indian contingent to Japan’s culture.
The mega event is going to happen in Japan from July 24 to August 9.
“We will hold one-day session for the players and others in New Delhi on February 27 and in Patiala two days later at the campus of National Institute of Sports (NIS),” Prof Rakwal added saying that these players and officials will have to interact with the Japanese people right after getting down at the airport.
They would also have to interact with officials from various departments including that of anti-doping, sports.
Japan is known worldwide for the bowing postures the people use to greet or introduce each other, and that is something not all are aware of.
