Onkar S. Kanwar – the Chairman of Apollo Tyres Limited is among this year’s foreign recipients of the 2018 Autumn Imperial Decorations.
The Government of Japan announced this honour in recognition of his contributions to strengthening the economic relations between Japan and India and promoting Japanese companies’ entry into the Indian market.
The Apollo Tyres chairman will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star.
Recently only, Onkar S Kanwar was awarded with the Officers Cross (Civilian Division) of the ‘Order of Merit’ of Hungary in recognition of his work towards strengthening Hungarian-Indian economic relations through the company’s investment in Hungary, thereby helping create new jobs in Hungary.
According to a FICCI release, Kanwar actively participated in the discussions that led to the conclusion of the Japan-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).
Through the convening of regular joint meetings on business cooperation with the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), Kanwar has tremendously contributed to strengthening economic relations between Japan and India and Japanese private investment to India, it stated.
As Chairman of Apollo Tyres Ltd., Mr. Kanwar has supported the entry of Japanese automotive industries into the Indian market and their market expansion by supplying compatible quality tyres to Japanese manufacturers. Currently, Mr. Kanwar is introducing Total Quality Management (TQM) and other Japanese philosophies to his corporate management.
As it delivers the announcement, the Embassy of Japan in India renders homage to Mr. Kanwar’s long years of service.
Kanwar holds major position in the corporate world such as Chairman of India-Japan Business Cooperation Committee, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) from 2005 to present and Chairman & Managing Director of Apollo Tyres Limited from 2002 to present. Kanwar was also the President of FICCI from 2004 to 2005.

This decoration was first awarded by the President of the Republic of Hungary, Janos Ader, on the recommendation of the Hungarian Prime Minister. H E Gyula Petho, Ambassador of Hungary to India, officially handed over the ‘Order of Merit’ to Onkar S Kanwar in Delhi at a specially hosted reception.
