NEW DELHI: Taiwan on Monday lifted an entry ban on degree-seeking international students including both new and those currently enrolled in universities in Taiwan, in yet another signal of its successful management on the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taiwan is deeply committed to welcoming Indian students, said Peters Chen, Director of Education Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in India.

The students will be required to undergo quarantine for 14 days, either in a facility arranged by their university or in a government-designated facility on their arrival in Taiwan. The students have to contact their universities immediately, and then the universities will report the admission list to the MOE. The students have to apply for a student visa and additional permit with required and authenticated documents, which will take a longer time to complete it. Due to the limited international flights from India, the number of degree-seeking students arriving from India may not be able to report to the university between one to two months or even later after the new semester has started.

Taiwan has been praised for its highly effective Covid-19 response, with confirmed 487 Covid-19 cases and seven deaths. Everything is mostly opened and schools are operated as usual. Therefore, Taiwan has gradually relaxed its rules on June 17, July 22, and Aug 5. On Aug 24, the entry ban was further eased to allow new students who are going to pursue degrees in Taiwan, excluding the students who will go for a short-term exchange programme or Mandarin programme.

According to MOE Taiwan, it has more 1.3 lac, international students, in 2019, equivalent to 10.5% of students on university campuses. Among that, 2,783 were from India. Based on the current student numbers and the direction of the NEP 2020, internationalization is one of the most important parts for higher education institutes, and Taiwan is ready to have more cooperation with universities and schools in India in terms of signing concrete MoUs for research collaboration, Mandarin courses, Mandarin test, student or faculty exchange, co-publication, etc., said Peters.
