Sikkim set to roll out red carpet for Korean companies, investment
Sikkim CM has assured Korea to extend all possible support for investment from Korean companies including the policy decision to facilitate the investment.
New Delhi/Gangtok (Sikkim): Upbeat on the maiden visit of the high-level South Korean trade delegation to Sikkim, the state government on Friday evening assured it of all possible support for the Korean companies planning to invest in this northeastern state of India.
The state has thrown open investment opportunities for the Korean companies in automation in organic agriculture, improvement of the road network, food processing, information technology, adventure tourism, training of local manpower, automobile industries, health, and food industry sectors.
The state also indicated that it would implement changes in the policy too, if required, and would not hesitate to take bold steps for policy decisions.
While interacting with the 6-member visiting Korean delegation, the Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed happiness over the visit of delegates and assured them to extend all possible support for investment from Korean companies including the policy decision to facilitate the investment.
The Sikkim CM said this during a dinner hosted for the visiting delegation on Friday. He was accompanied by the state Commerce & Industries Department and Tourism & Civil Aviation Department Bedu S. Panth, Additional Chief Secretary Dr. Jayakumar, Tourism & Civil Aviation Department and Secretary H.K. Sharma, Commerce & Industries Department, and other senior officials.
The Korean delegation comprised the senior officials of the Korean Embassy, the Korean Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), and Korea- Startup Centre, K-Sure, and Korea India Research & Innovation Center (KIRI).
The Chief Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary, Finance also told the Korean delegates that the potential sector for investment in Sikkim was in the areas like higher education, agricultural production, value addition and export, creation of a center of excellence (COE), exploring marketing potential, production scope for sticky rice in Sikkim and emphasized on Sikkim delegation visit to Korea and vice versa.
The visiting Korean delegation reportedly told the state government officials that they visited Sikkim for the first time to see the local condition especially the human resources, investment opportunities, and further approach for Korean investment in Sikkim.
According to the state government officials, the Korean delegation led by Kwang Seok Yang, the Commercial Attaché, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, and KOTRA Managing Director, South Asian Region Moon Young Kim, also laid emphasis on cultural exchange between Sikkim and Korea, developing tour packages between the two destinations, providing study/ teaching/employment opportunities for Sikkim youth in Korea, providing study opportunities for Korean students in Sikkim/ also introducing Korean language teaching in the educational institutions of Sikkim and also developing food industries in Sikkim.
It also laid stress on knowledge sharing, online marketing, the transport sector, and the introduction of Sikkim to Korean Investors.
The delegates requested Sikkim officials to prioritize the investment sector in Sikkim and facilities available for investments from Korean companies with details of incentives, subsidies, power supply, etc. and assured to take further actions to have a detailed discussion with Korean companies for investing in Sikkim.
