India-Korea joint art exhibition ‘Spontaneous Balance’ ends on a futuristic note

NEW DELHI: The 2-month long joint art exhibition ‘Spontaneous Balance’, a show of works by Korean artist, Jang Hee Mun and Indian modernist Shobha Broota at the Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI), came to an end on May 20.

While many enjoyed the artworks physically by visiting the Baek Nam June Hall at the KCCI, others joined the gala show virtually using the link www.kcci-exhibitions.com/spontaneous-balance . The India Art Fair 2022 also hosted the exhibition virtually by offering the virtual tour of the exhibition through its website.

After a hiatus of about two pandemic-struck years, it was first physically organised art exhibition at KCCI from March 23 to May 20.

The artists’ works belonged to two different cultures and traditions, however, both their works appeared to be characterised by spontaneity. While Ms. Broota focused on the portrayal of order as the true essence of beauty and devotion, Ms. Mun used a direct and pure artistic approach to the raw aspects of reality.

Jang Hee Mun, a Korean national staying in India for many years, said that it was a days of hard work to put together the concept of bringing the artworks of two artists to organize the joint exhibition, and finally it was there for the visual delight of the audience for almost two months.

“Besides the art lovers visiting the Baek Nam June Hall at the KCCI, others joined the exhibition virtually using the link the India Art Fair 2022 hosted on its website. The India Art Fair weblink directed many art lovers to the KCCI website that hosted the virtual tour of the exhibition. It was truly a pleasant experience to exhibit my artworks jointly with a very senior India artist Shobha Broota,” said Jang Hee Mun.

Artists from South Korea and India, Jang Hee Mun and Shobha Broota respectively have gone through tremendous transformations in their journey with art. While Broota focuses on the portrayal of order as the true essence of beauty and devotion, Mun focuses on the raw aspects of reality. Both their works show, in contrast, the diversity and the essence of the natural world, and yet strike a wonderful ‘Spontaneous Balance’.

While visiting the exhibition at KCCI on the final day, Euy Don Park, President, Federation of Korean Associations in India said that the joint exhibition Spontaneous Balance was symbolic of deepening India-South Korea relations in the soft power arena.

“The exhibition was a visual delight for the art lovers of both the countries – India and South Korea. There was a huge amount of enthusiasm to see and explore more commonalities between the two different yet similar arts forms. People look forward to more such exhibitions involving artists from both the countries,” Park added.

Both the artists who showed abstract expressions of reality through two diverse backgrounds and experiences. Their works are a subtle reflection of their cultures and experiences. Through their individual viewpoint, they use the balance and spontaneity of shapes to portray the world’s order and disorder.
