Gurgaon. The food freaks had a gala time last few days as the city hosted the 10-day Northeast Food Festival on March 22-30.

Hotel Crowne Plaza Today, Gurgaon and Northeast Odyssey introduced a range of cuisine representative of the eight north-eastern states to a discerning new audience at restaurant Café G.

Food from the Northeastern part of India has come a long way. Gone is the time when it was synonymous with just momos as the region has a rich repertoire of cuisines.

At the very entry of the Cafe G, the visitors were welcomed by the specially crafted wooden gate taking after the style of the ones found in northeastern states.

And to create the mood and spirit, the photos graphs of the amateur and well-known photographers were there to showcase the kaleidoscope of northeastern culture.

The menu offered the main course with Thevo Chu, Keli Chana, Mizo Bai, Ironba, Dohneiiong, Aarsa pok, Assamese fish curry while sumptuous Ooti soup set the mood, to begin with.

The dessert included Chak hao kheer and Tel Pitha. And not to forget was the Singhpho tea.

According to Hoihnu Hauzel, the founder of Northeast Odyssey, the beginning of a culinary journey seamlessly integrated regional culture, heritage, and tourism in an urban set-up. “And it offered new opportunities too for myriad communities to get-together and explore far-flung-but-local food systems, besides promoting economic development on a larger plane,” said Hauzel.

A score of well-known personalities in the realm of food took time out to sample food from the Northeast.

These included well-known artist Satish Gupta, social activist Temsutula Imsong, the IFBB Pro Rita Singh, public leader Linda Newmai and noted food critic Sourish Bhattacharyya to name a few.

According to Suraj Kumar Jha, the general manager, Crown Plaza Today, Gurgaon, the hallmark of Northeastern food is that it is easy to cook, full of nutrients and great for weight watchers. It is cooked in its own flavour with many natural spices with healing properties.

Designer Manjuri Hazarika complemented the mood with products made of animal horns displayed at the makeshift merchandise outlet in the restaurant Café G.
