TOKYO/NEW DELHI: In their bid to spread the good word about India, improve its image and attract more Japanese investors, Japan and India together have published a ‘Compendium of Successful Stories’ featuring new-old 70 Indo-Japanese joint venture and collaboration companies.

This 162-page hardcover book mentions names such as Ichibanya, Nihon Edutech, Skata Inx besides Afcons Infra, Cyient, Dr. Reddy’s, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Mitsui, Marubeni, Honda, Toray, Maruti-Suzuki, and many more. The compendium, however, misses some of the major Indo-Japanese collaborations such as KRISUMI Corporation – a collaboration between Sumitomo Corporation, Japan and Krishna Group, India.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) with the support of the Embassy of India in Tokyo, Embassy of Japan in New Delhi, Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), and Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in India (JCCII) has published this compilation.

The compendium was released in New Delhi by Hiroshi Suzuki, Ambassador of Japan to India during the Business Session on “India-Japan@75: Realizing the ¥ 5 trillion Partnership in Next Five Years”, on December 20, 2022. Previously, Indian Ambassador to Japan Sibi George released it in Tokyo on December 6.

It is noteworthy that the influx of Japanese companies to India has slowed down in last couple of years as their total number remains stagnant. As against 1441 number Japanese in 2018, the present number is 1439 till 2021 as many Japanese investors sought to set up their ventures alternatively in Vietnam, Indonesia, and Bangladesh, and skipped coming to India. The Compendium of Successful Stories is an effort towards boosting the morale of the potential Japanese investors who are sitting on the brink and thinking whether to go to India or not.

However since the Compendium is published in English language only, it is yet to be seen how many Japanese people read it.

In his statement Chandrajit Banerjee, Director-General, CII, said that this compendium illustrated some of the defining Indo-Japanese joint venture and collaborations that highlighted the great outcomes of the enduring 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Nobuhiko Sasaki, Chairman & CEO, JETRO, Tokyo said in his message said that he perceived this book to be one of the best references for those newcomers who were considering future collaboration with their Indian counterparts.

“I would like to congratulate CII on the book launching of the “COMPENDIUM OF SUCCESSFUL STORIES” which is a splendid collection of collaborations and partnerships between the Japanese and Indian companies. …..At present, we have 1,439 Japanese companies and their 4.790 offices and factories in India. However, I do expect the number to amplify in future, by having further participation from diverse sectors such as Hi-tech Manufacturing, Digital Transformation, Green Hydrogen and Advanced Technology, etc., and more Japanese SMEs in these sectors,” the JETRO chief added.
