Shillong, Meghalaya: Imagine this: the fresh hilltop breeze, the shimmering surface of Umiam Lake mirroring the golden glow of the setting sun, and the hum of anticipation as The Hills Festival returns to captivate hearts and minds in its fifth spectacular season. With support from Meghalaya Tourism, this eagerly awaited festival will take place on December 6–7, 2024, offering an unforgettable weekend that celebrates music, art, culture, and cuisine amidst the breathtaking beauty of Northeast India.
The festival offers something for everyone. Whether you’re drawn to soulful melodies, thrilling adventures, or bold culinary flavors, it promises to deliver. Family- and pet-friendly, it’s the perfect gathering for loved ones, both human and furry.
At the heart of the festival is its music. With two stages showcasing a wide range of styles, attendees will be treated to an unforgettable auditory experience. The Hills Live Stage will feature acoustic performances, folk traditions, and band sets that blend seamlessly with the serene backdrop of Umiam Lake. Meanwhile, the Electric Hills Stage will bring an energetic mix of experimental sounds and high-energy beats, ensuring a lively atmosphere long into the night. The artist lineup includes Yashraj, a Mumbai-based rapper known for redefining hip-hop with tracks like Dhundhala and Ishq Nachaave.
It also features the progressive metal brilliance of I Built The Sky, led by Melbourne guitarist Ro Han, and the soul-stirring Khasi folk sounds of Meghalaya’s own Mookhuri. Other highlights include the Samoan-Indian artist Tiana Khasi, whose music fuses R&B, jazz, and contemporary vibes, and Lis, a dynamic drummer from the USA known for her electrifying performances. London-based producer Robu will bring heavy beats and infectious rhythms, while INSOWMYA’s electronic sets promise to keep the crowd dancing. Nigerian-Indian rapper Yung Sammy will round out the global appeal with his Afro-Desi fusion tracks.
Beyond music, food takes center stage at The Hills Festival. The Forage Aisle by SUNRISE offers an immersive culinary journey led by Chef Nambie Jessica Marak, Ridalang Tariang, and Team Roma Eatery. They craft innovative dishes using Meghalaya’s wild edibles and traditional ingredients, blending time-honored techniques with modern flavors. For an even more expansive experience, the SUNRISE HILLSFEAST will showcase the talents of over 20 local food entrepreneurs, celebrating the state’s rich gastronomic heritage with dishes that delight the senses and warm the soul.
Art and culture are woven seamlessly into the festival’s fabric. The sprawling 43-acre venue will be transformed with immersive art installations that blend with Meghalaya’s natural beauty. These artistic creations will captivate and inspire, creating a space where creativity and nature converge. For those seeking adventure, CampX, the festival’s official camping partner, offers a chance to stay close to the action while enjoying cozy tents, stunning views, and a unique connection with the festival’s enchanting surroundings. Hot air ballooning, a highlight from previous seasons, will make its grand return, offering breathtaking views of Umiam Lake, the rolling hills, and endless blue skies.
The Hills Festival is more than just an event—it’s a tribute to the spirit of Meghalaya. From the shimmering waters of Umiam Lake to the rich cultural expressions of Khasi folk traditions, every aspect of the festival celebrates the region’s heritage. Visitors are also encouraged to explore Meghalaya’s natural wonders, including its living root bridges, mystical caves, and cascading waterfalls, making the festival a gateway to the state’s many treasures.
At the helm of this cultural phenomenon are Ridalang Tariang and Sahil Majaw, the visionary founders of The Hills Festival. Their dream of creating a platform to showcase Meghalaya’s breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture has turned into a global attraction. Under their leadership, the festival has grown into an unmissable event that seamlessly merges local authenticity with international allure.
