Delayed Interchange on Yamuna E-way: Moved by a Japanese executive, PMO intervenes; Asks NHAI to clarify
NEW DELHI: Hanging fire for many years, the proposed construction of a cloverleaf interchange on the Yamuna Expressway has finally caught the much-required attention of the Prime Minister Office (PMO) of India.
Moved by a Japanese executive expressing concern on the delay, the PMO recently wrote to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and sought a clarification on the current status of the project.
Costing around Rs. 75 Crore, the cloverleaf interchange on the Yamuna Expressway if of great strategic significance. It is aimed at connecting Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) and Yamuna Expressway to ease access to upcoming Jewar International Airport from Delhi-NCR towns like Gurugram but the project has been put on the back burner for so many years.
In its reply, the NHAI informed the PMO that the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has awarded the project to a private sector company through e-tendering, and indicated that the work on this project would take off soon.
“Monitoring committee constituted by the Supreme Court of India to review the progress of construction of the EPE, in its 29th meeting decided that the interchange on Yamuna Expressway will be constructed by Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) through e-tendering to connect EPE and Yamuna Expressway. Accordingly, YEIDA has taken up the work and awarded the project to M/s. Devv Yash Project and Infrastructure Pvt Ltd. through e-tendering,” the NHAI said in its reply to PMO.
The PMO further informed Nobuhiro Takahashi – an Advisor of Suggestion Activities, Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in India (JCCII).
Recently, Nobuhiro Takahashi wrote to the PMO citing very serious concerns because of the delayed project.
“Many Citizens in the past requested the UP State to realize the connection of EPE and Yamuna Expressway with Interchange sooner. However, the process of vendor selection had stopped for a long time. Without the connectivity of Yamuna Express Way, EPE, and NH8, how the National Security Guard (NSG) can operate using road transportation to send troops to the Jewar Airport, in case of Radical Islamic Terrorist attack,” said Takahashi in his letter to the PMO. Takahashi is a senior management level executive with a well-known Japanese auto-component company in India and has been living in India for the last 13 years.
According to Nobuhiro Takahashi, one of the agendas in another five years to come for India is also the expansion of the Indian economy size or Indian domestic market value to realize new India through infrastructure development.
“My small understanding of road Infrastructure is that it is not only for the convenience of citizens and efficiency of economic activities to seek for the independency of the economy without depending on some specific country like China but the road infrastructure is equally important for the defense and security sector,” he added.
