NEW DELHI: Indian nurses facing the risk of losing jobs in the gulf because of new education requirements in countries like the United Arab Emirates (UAE), can look forward to better career opportunities in Japan.
The only thing they require is the elementary knowledge of Japanese language and etiquette.
Currently, the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and Japan Foundation is in talks with the state government of Kerala for setting up of Japanese language speaking institutes there for imparting language and culture training to nurses to make them employable in Japan.
Since the majority of nurses from India who go to gulf countries originate from South Indian state Kerala, the focus state is Kerala, which clarified the NSDC officials.
“Many nurses are coming back to Kerala from gulf because of problems there. We have spoken to the state government to help it establish Japanese language institutes there so that nurses can learn the Japanese language. And instead of going to UAE, they can go to Japan as in abundance opportunities there,” Manish Kumar, MD and CEO NSDC told Asian Community News (ACN) Network.
NDSC is a public-private partnership model between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and private sector companies.
Japan Foundation in New Delhi that runs many programs for promoting the use of Japanese language and culture in Indian, is the language and cultural arm of the government of Japan.
Last year, hundreds of Indian nurses especially from Kerala had lost jobs and others were demoted at lower salaries as the UAE government had made it mandatory for nurses to be carrying bachelor degrees.
Since the majority of the nurses employed in the Gulf hold diplomas, they either lost their jobs and had to return to India or were demoted at lower salary slabs.
Kumar said that the Japan Foundation was also in touch with the Kerala state government.
He said that NSDC was also in touch with the well-known Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University for starting courses on the Japanese language to make nurses employable in Japan.
“The demand in the nursing care in Japan is on the rise but India is not able to send nurses as Japan requires these nurses to be having a basic knowledge of Japanese language and culture. Recently we were able to provide 150 nurses as against a particular demand for 450,” Kumar added.
