Gurgaon residents, corporate employees and volunteers of social organisations launched a campaign on Sunday to make the people observe green Dipawali and shun the use of crackers.
They also distributed plants to the people at various places in Gurgaon.
Holding placards bearing slogan “Plant a tree this Diwali, Say No to Crackers”, the volunteers spread the message of green Dipawali at three places – Good Earth Mall, Arcadia Traffic crossing and B&C block of Southcity Phase 2 on Sunday.
The campaign would span for three days till Tuesday (November 4-6), till a day before the festival of lights Diwali, which is being celebrated across the country on Wednesday, November 7.
The campaign witnessed prompt response from the mall hoppers, passer-bys and expatriates.
Brain Tik a visitor from Canada who is on a leisure trip to India said that Dipawali was a few days away but the pollution in the air was already making it difficult for the people to breathe.
The 3 day campaign is being led by a social organization working in the field of environment protection Socio-Motto and being supported by EDP Services.
“The air quality level would get even worse by Dipawali when people burst fire crackers. I am worried about that day. People should restrict the use of fire crackers,” he said and lauded the efforts of spreading the message of green Dipwali.
“We received overwhelming response from the people who pledged to observe green Dipawali and avoid the use of fire crackers. They happily accepted tree saplings and promised to grow the same in their balconies at their homes. Such efforts would help reduce air pollution level making us to breathe easy,” said Jagdish Kukreja, the president of Socio-Motto.
