“Hanbok”- A Korean Traditional attire gets introduced to Indian youths

New Delhi: Korean Cultural Centre India in association with Formal Hanbok Association organized 2-day “Hanbok Workshop” at its premises in Lajpat Nagar 4. The workshop aimed at making the participants aware of Hanbok – Korean traditional attire and its importance in life.

The first day of the workshop highlighted the theme ‘wedding ceremony’ and explained the entire theme with the help of traditional Korean wedding performance whereas on the second day the theme was ‘Hanbok for special days, where the participants were engaged in trying the hanboks.

Hanbok is a traditional Korean dress for various occasions such as festivals, celebrations, and ceremonies. It is characterized by vibrant colors, graceful lines, and forms.

There are different Hanboks for different occasions for both male and female like for child’s first birthday there is Dolbok, for age ceremony –Gwanryebok and for the marriage ceremony, there is Cheongdanryeong (Groom suit) and Nokwonsam(bride costume).

In traditions, Koreans have worn Hanbok to show courtesy to the special occasions, as changing clothes in proper ways in different events. Even embroidery on clothes has meaning for wishing fortune and prosperity of a person who wears it.

Park Chang-sook, Chairperson of Formal Hanbok Association explained about varieties of Hanbok and its feature through video and presentation. She also informed about how to wear Hanbok in a proper way by presenting models wearing different Hanboks which made people easier to understand about wearing a style of it. She also told about the relevance and importance of floral designs, lines and patterns on Hanboks.

Kim Kum-pyoung – Director Korean Cultural Centre India, said, “As India has Saree, Hanbok is an important part of Korean culture, through which people can find not only the beauty of it but also the culture, courtesy, and spirit.”

Dipali, one of the participants said, “It was worth to attend this workshop and I liked the presentation which showed different Hanboks for different occasions and came to know about different Korean Traditional dresses and their other accessories used along with Korean dress.”

After the presentation students had photo time while wearing Hanbok at the trial session.
