GUWAHATI (ASSAM): IIT Guwahati and Taiwan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish the Taiwan Education Center (TEC) at the IIT Guwahati campus. The MOU was signed by Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, and Peters LY Chen, Director of the Education Division at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India (TECC). The signing ceremony at TECC’s office was witnessed by TECC’s Representative Baushuan Ger.

Under this collaboration, Taiwan will assist IIT Guwahati in recruiting Mandarin teachers who are experts in curriculum design and foreign language course evaluation. These teachers will conduct Mandarin language courses, enhancing students’ language skills and cultural understanding. The initiative aims to benefit students interested in pursuing further degrees and careers in Taiwan, particularly in the semiconductor and AI fields.

Prof. Devendra Jalihal emphasized IIT Guwahati’s commitment to fostering international educational ties. He stated, “This collaboration with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre is a pivotal moment for our institute. By integrating Mandarin language instruction into our curriculum and building strong connections with leading Taiwanese institutions, we are enhancing our students’ linguistic skills and broadening their understanding of different cultures. This partnership opens new academic, industry, and research opportunities, allowing our students to explore diverse educational pathways and develop a deeper appreciation for the global landscape.”

IIT Guwahati’s strategic location near the semiconductor fab in Morigaon and Tata Electronics Pvt. Ltd.’s semiconductor plant, in collaboration with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation of Taiwan, positions it as a hub for talent cultivation. The institute aims to foster expertise in semiconductor technology and provide specialized education to meet industry demands. Additionally, the focus on Mandarin language education will attract and train Mandarin-speaking students, enriching educational offerings and cultural exchange capabilities.

Mr. Peters Chen, Director of the Education Division at TECC, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration. He said, “IIT Guwahati, as one of India’s top universities, plays a crucial role in northeast India’s development and the semiconductor industry. We are pleased to work together to provide students with Mandarin language skills, Taiwanese culture, and exchange programs between Indian and Taiwanese universities. A Taiwanese teacher will soon join the campus, offering the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) for interested students. Furthermore, scholarships will facilitate further studies in Taiwan.”

The collaboration also explores short-term student exchange programs. Both sides anticipate students coming to IIT Guwahati for brief stays to learn about knowledge and culture in North East India. This MOU represents a significant step in strengthening educational and industry ties between India and Taiwan.

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, established in 1994, completed 25 years of glorious existence in 2019. IIT Guwahati has retained the 7th position among the best engineering institutions of the country and 9th position in ‘Overall’ category in the ‘India Rankings 2024’ declared by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Union Ministry of Education on August 12th.
