While referring to the Korean War 1950-53 that was fought between South Korea and North Korea when the entire world was divided, Indian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs & Culture Mrs. Meenakshi Lekhi said Friday that India had at that time stood by South Korea, and shall continue to do the same in future also.
“The friends are there not only in good times, but also in difficult times. As the times have tested, India and Republic of Korea share the value system, So, we continue to be good friends not for the good times only, but in difficult times also,” said the minister in her address at the embassy of Republic of Korea in New Delhi on Friday evening on the occasion of commemoration of South Korea’s National Day Reception event.
The developments especially ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, tense Korean peninsula due to North Korea’s flurry of ballistic missile launches including one that flew over Japan, and China’s assertiveness to invade Taiwan have raised tensions. Recently, the South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida not only held a 25-minute long phone conversation, they also had physically met last month in New York on the side lines of the 77th United Nations General Assembly to discuss the evolving situation in Asian subcontinent.
Indian minister Mrs. Lekhi said that next year was going to be very crucial year for further strengthening the relationship between India and South Korea. “With India assuming presidency of G-20, India, South Korea and India celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations next year, and President Yoon Suk Yeol and Prime Minister Modi having close contacts, I can foresee huge amount of well being on both sides, and warm relationship. These ties will continue to help not just the two countries but the world at large.”
The G20, or Group of Twenty, is an intergovernmental forum of the world’s major developed and developing economies. It comprises 19 countries – Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, UK, USA) and the European Union (EU).

India will assume the Presidency of the G20 for one year from 01 December 2022 to 30 November 2023. Under its Presidency, India is expected to host over 200 G20 meetings across the country, beginning December 2022. The G20 Leaders’ Summit at the level of Heads of State/Government is scheduled to be held on 09 and 10 September 2023 in New Delhi.
In his welcome address, Chang Jae-bok, Ambassador of South Korea to India said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Yoon Suk Yeol have agreed to further strengthen bilateral cooperation. “As India assume the presidency of G-20 in December this year, we expect more high-level official visits from Korea to India. The year 2023 will be monumental for two countries as we will celebrate together the 50th anniversary of our diplomatic ties. This offers us an excellent opportunity to chart a new course for the next 50 years of our shared prosperity. Our partnership are free from the baggage of history.”
