NEW DELHI: Japanese companies have set their eyes on India’s premium technology institutions IITs and IIITs for hiring the best of the talent in the field of information technology (IT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

For this, these companies are ready to pay best-in-the-industry pay packages and perks, even higher than the companies of European and western origins.

Currently, Japanese companies require about 4,000 IT graduates whereas the supply is almost negligible as they face competition from the US, UK and even China where companies offer very hefty pay packages.

And helping the Japanese companies in this endeavor in India is the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), a public-private partnership between the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and private sector companies.

NSDC has approached IITs and IIITs to inform them of the interest the Japanese companies have shown in hiring IT graduates for their locations worldwide.

Manish Kumar, MD & CEO, NSDC

“We are speaking to IITs and asking students if they are interested in going to Japan instead of USA as Japanese companies can pay higher than US companies. What they need to do is just learn very basic Japanese language,” Manish Kumar, MD and CEO NSDC told Asian Community News (ACN) Network.

Kumar said that the Japanese companies were looking for IIT graduates in the field of IT, AI and software to the tune of about 4000 numbers.

“But supply lags behind the demand of IIT graduates and we (NSDC) are working on the supply side. Recently I addressed directors of 10 IITs at a conference held at IIT Bangalore where the Chairman of AICT was also there. I shared the opportunity emerging with Japanese companies. IITs looked keen on Japanese companies,” said Kumar.

Kumar said that even if the technology graduates didn’t know the Japanese language, that didn’t matter much as the Japanese were keen on hiring them at any cost. The Japanese language could be learned later, he added.

In December, the Japanese companies paid best-in-the-industry pay packages to the graduates of IIT Bombay during the 2-day campus placement drive.  These companies included Sysmex Corporation, Murata, Honda R&D, NEC, and Sony, who recruited the highest number of graduates as compared to other companies.

Japanese companies face stiff competition from other companies

In terms of annual packages, the Japanese companies like Honda (R&D) offered Japanese Yen (JPY) 8.2 million (Rs 53.89 lakhs), Japan, Sony offered JPY 7.863 million per annum (Rs 51.67 lakhs) and NEC JPY 4.328 million per annum (Rs 28.44 lakhs).

But these Japanese companies had to face stiff competition from companies like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), Optiver (Netherlands) and Microsoft (USA).

At IIT Guwahati too Japanese companies face stiff competition from Microsoft, Uber, Accenture, SOU, BNY Melon, Goldman Sachs, IBM, Nutanix, American Express, Quadeye, Oracle, Bajaj, and Google.

Japanese Govt pushing to make Japanese language courses in IITs, IIITs, and IIMS

In its bid to meet the huge demand for the IT and science & technology graduates fir its companies in the future, the  Japanese government is negotiating with India to introduce Japanese language courses in IITs, IIITs and Institute of Management (IIMs).

The Japanese government through its embassy in India is in touch with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) to finalize the ongoing negotiations.

The Japanese government wants UGC to introduce Japanese language courses in all premium institutions like IITs, IIITs and IIMs,” Hiroaki Konishi, Japanese Language Advisor to Japan Foundation, New Delhi told Asian Community News (ACN) Network last year.

It’s better for IIT people to work somewhere else. Definitely not a country to work for. People are good but the work I suppose is better in India in the IT field or for that matter in the US. I guess other engineers in Japan would also agree with this. In the field of AI, Japan is nowhere. IT in general is in a bad shape here.

Dear Pratik, thanks for your feedback.
Since Japan is not so good at AI and IT streams, it has proposed to hire IITians and pay higher pay perks.
I think it’s a welcome move by the Japanese corporate sector as they offer IITians a broader scope of work,
and also an opportunity to IITians to compare the work culture with the US companies.

Japan is a good place and personally I have been here for 22 years now.
It comes down to what you are looking out for. If you want a better work culture, meritocracy, entrepreneurship, I would suggest to look elsewhere. If you want less competition, relative social isolation, happiness prioritized over commercial success alone then Japan can be WONDERFUL.

There are over 8000 Indian professionals across Japan, so I cannot speak for all, but the number of kids born here who choose to stay in Japan is so low, most go to HK/SG/UK/US/AUS.. that should serve as an indicator.
