June 24: Keio University, Japan, Press Club, Kolkata and Rika Institute organise “Media Sensitisation Programme: Disaster Risk Reduction & Risk Communication”
The workshop aims at enhancing awareness among journalists on different aspects of media linked to disaster risk reduction, and learning and mutually exchanging lessons presented from the media specialists of India and Japan.
KOLKATA/NEW DELHI: The India Japan Laboratory of Keio University, Japan, along with Press Club, Kolkata and Rika Institute, and Resilience Innovation Knowledge Academy (RIKA) is organising a one-day media training, capacity enhancement and sensitization workshop titled “Media Sensitisation Programme: Disaster Risk Reduction & Risk Communication” at the Press Club of Kolkata on June 24.
Supported by both the Government of Japan and the Government of India, the event is the part of the year-long commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between India and Japan.
The target participants are journalists engaged with different types of media, media managers and people from various government agencies.
Javed Khan, Minister for Disaster, Government of West Bengal would also be present in the inaugural session of the event.
Dr. Rajib Shaw, Professor in Graduate School of Media and Governance in Keio University’s Shonan Fujisawa Campus (SFC), Tokyo who recently received the prestigious United Nations Sasakawa Disaster Reduction Award at the “Global Platform Conference” sponsored by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), would be one of the keys speakers in the inaugural session of the event.
A Japanese national of Indian origin Dr. Shaw bagged the award that recognizes his contribution to “building resilience through a multi-hazard approach” out of 200 nominations from across the world.
Soma Dutta from RIKA would be the MC (Master of Ceremonies) of the event while Snehasis Sur, President, Press Club, Kolkata would deliver the welcome address. Koichi Nakagawa, Consulate General of Japan in Kolkata would also address the audience. Kingsuk Pramanik, Secretary, Press Club Kolkata would also be present on the occasion.
According to Tomo Kawane, a well-known India-Japan relations & consultant, and Senior researcher Keio University, the workshop “Media Sensitisation Programme: Disaster Risk Reduction & Risk Communication” aims at enhancing awareness among journalists on different aspects of media linked to disaster risk reduction, and learning and mutually exchanging lessons presented from the media specialists of India and Japan.
“The media is considered as a major stakeholder of utmost importance in all phases of disasters, with different types of media having different proactive roles to play in disaster risk reduction. Before disasters, they play essential roles not only in bringing an early warning to people but also in enhancing their perception of the need to take action,” Dr. Shaw, the brain behind this event said.

A total of three experts from Japan will offer their presentations during the one-day event.
