Ceremonies to mark the centennial anniversary of the March First Independence Movement of Korea against Japanese colonial rule, a non-violant movent in nature like that of India’s Independence led by Mahatama Gandhi are being held in Korea and it’s embassies and cultural centres across the world.

In India too, the frontage of the Korean Cultural Center in New Delhi was decorated with huge National flag of South Korea.

The major ceremony was held at Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square on March 1.

President Moon Jae-in and first lady Kim Jung-sook, as well as 33 citizen representatives and thousands of guests attended the ceremony.

“We lived through the past 100 years, hoping to build a fair and just country that strives for humanity’s peace and freedom. The next 100 years will be the time to build a greater nation for our people, without being pushed around by past ideologies. The next century will unite us, heart and mind,” said President Moon.

One hundred years ago today, Korea’s first uprising against Japanese colonial rule began on March 1, 1919. These street demonstrations began in Seoul and spread throughout the country, providing a catalyst for the Korean Independence Movement.

Following the March 1 demonstrations, the Korean Provisional Government was established in Shanghai that same year.

This is why 2019 is such a meaningful year for Korea.

This year is a celebration of 100 years since our fight for autonomy and freedom, and 100 years since the Korean Declaration of Independence.
