India would soon have Korean War Memorial – a mark of remembrance for the soldiers who had laid their lives during Korean war 1950-53.
The memorial would come up in the Central Delhi somewhere in diplomatic enclave Chanakya Puri by the end of next year.
This was disclosed by the Korean Ambassador to India HE Shin Bong-Kil in New Delhi during a seminar “Emerging India-Korea Relations: Convergence of India’s Act East Policy and Korea’s New Southern Policy” held in New Delhi on Tuesday, the October 16.
“All 21 countries that participated in the Korean War have had Korean War Memorials, be it US and UK but India is yet to have one. However, Indian and Korean governments have agreed in principle to build the memorial in New Delhi. It is likely to come up by the end of next year,” the ambassador said.
The war was fought between North Korea (with the support of China and the Soviet Union) and South Korea (with the principal support of the United States).
The war began on 25 June 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea following a series of clashes along the border.
“India was among the countries that provided medical and custodian force for the prisoners of war while other countries sent their combat forces. India played neutral country and contributed in peaceful manner,” Shin told the media persons on the sidelines of the seminar.
The Korean envoy said that the place for the memorial had been designated in central Delhi but some clearances from various departments were yet to come.
“The Korean War Veterans Association in India will be undertaking the project while the Korean government would be supporting it for the cause and would also provide funds
The Ministry of External Affairs of India too has given green nod to the project.
