NEW DELHI: As a martial art, Tai Chi works on a number of levels, but the principal aim is to teach practitioners to relax and become fluid in their movements. This allows for smoother actions and quicker response times. The objective is for self-defense to become a reflexive action rather than a repetition of technique.

CRANE BREATHING is a favorite exercise for beginners and advanced students alike. It is so simple and easy and seems to be what the body and mind feel comfortable doing. It is a reminder that the Tai Chi Basics can be done anywhere and anytime.

According to Sensei Sumit K Virman – a 5th Dan Black Belt who began his martial arts of karate and kickboxing career in 1985 by training at YMCA, Delhi said the Tai Chi includes steps like keep weight equally distributed between both legs, keep your center of gravity low, don’t lock your knees, keep them soft and the joints open, breathe in and out through your nose, listen to the breath as it enters and leaves, places your hands over your lower abdomen. Relax your shoulders and elbows, move your weight into the front of each foot, then move it back to the back of each foot, and keep your feet flat on the floor.

Some more steps are such as after you develop a steady rhythm, again breathe in and out through your nose, listen to the breath as it enters and leaves, and think of your breath. Can you link the rocking motion and your breath? And finally, go nice and slow. Forward as you breathe in. Back as you breathe out.

Sumit K Virman regularly attends various martial arts courses and has participated in national and international martial arts seminars. He is a specialist in professional kickboxing & karate. He has institutes, personal and group classes running across Delhi NCR.

While talking about the benefits, Sumit K Virman said, “Tai Chi enhances the ability of the practitioner to maintain an inner calm, it enhances motivation and performance in all areas of life, such as work, social and home life, and it also helps reduce tension through the development of inner energy and calmness of the body.”

Other benefits include it develops deep concentration and mental focus, increases the flexibility of muscles and movement of the body, and enhances the quality of life, and improves the sense of humour, he added.

Kaishogun Martial Arts Academy run by Sumit K. Virman – a resident of New Delhi, has been working for this purpose for the last 25 years.

A score of people of all age groups are now practicing Karate and Kickboxing and deriving benefits from his teachings. Most people do it for self-defense while others go for it to attain proper fitness.
