The number of Japanese companies registered in India has reached the 1441 mark while the number of Japanese business establishments scattered across the country has been counted at 5102.
The influx of Japanese companies and setting up of business establishments on Indian soil has been growing at 5% since the year 2014, when the Narendra Modi-led BJP government took reigns of India
The data was released by Embassy of Japan and JETRO that updated the list of Japanese business establishments in India till October 2018, with the cooperation of Japanese Chambers of Commerce and industries in India.
Japanese business establishments mean Liaison Office/ Branch Office etc. of a Japanese company in India (as a foreign entity), or Indian Subsidiary (Wholly Owned/ Joint Venture) of a Japanese company in the form of Head Office, Manufacturing Unit, or Branch Office/ Business Office etc.
However, Franchisees or dealers are not counted under this category of Japanese business establishment.
Interestingly, Haryana and Maharashtra have been the favourite states for the Japanese businessmen and industrialists.
Haryana has maximum 393 Japanese companies out of a total of 1441 followed by Maharashtra with 243, Karnataka 224, Tamil Nadu 201and Delhi 162.
Maharashtra has maximum number of 810 Japanese business establishments followed by Tamil Nadu with 620, Haryana 609, Karnataka 529, Gujarat 383 and Delhi 340.
All the Indian states have Japanese business establishments as far as Jammu & Kashmir (22), and far eastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Mizoram (1 each), Tripura (5), Meghalaya (2)and Assam (56).
According to the press release issued by Embassy of Japan in India, over the last one year, the number of companies has increased by 72 (5% growth) as compared to 1,369 in 2017. Similarly, the number of establishments has increased by 264 (5% growth) as compared to 4,838 in 2017.
In Haryana and Maharashtra, the numbers of both Japanese companies and establishments increased more than those in other states.
The manufacturing sector accounts for half of the total Japanese companies and a third of the Japanese business establishments in India.
Further, there was a significant increase in the number of companies in sectors such as metal manufacturing industries as well as services this year.
On the other hand, some companies became non-Japanese due to corporate restructuring, change of ownership etc, the release stated.
