Taiwan can be a perfect partner for “Make in India” policy: TAITRA Chairman

Not only many big Taiwanese companies - Foxconn and Winston have started expanding their Indian operations, many more such as Phison Electronics were exploring opportunities to come to India to forge partnerships.

NEW DELHI: While indicating that Taiwan can help India become the production powerhouse of the world, James C F Huang, Chairman of Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) has said that Taiwan could be the perfect partner for India’s Make in India policy. Besides producing key components and parts for various kinds of products, Taiwan owns best management of the global supply chain.

At helm of the affairs of TAITRA since 2017 and former Taiwanese diplomat who served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2006 to 2008, told Asian Community News (ACN) Network on the sidelines of Taiwan Expo in New Delhi, “Taiwan can be the perfect partner for India’s Make in India policy. The reason behind this is that Taiwanese companies have the best management of the global supply chain, and we also produce key components and parts for various kinds of products.”

He said that not only many big Taiwanese companies had started expanding their Indian operations, many more were exploring opportunities to come to India to forge partnerships.

“The big Taiwanese companies such as Foxconn and Winston are increasing their investment and operations in India. Companies like Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (PSMC) is working with Tata group to set up the very first 12-inch wafer fab in India (in Dholera, Gujarat) in Semi-conductor industry. There are companies like Phison Electronics – the ICT design house in Taiwan are setting up a joint venture with its counterpart in India,” he told ACN Network.

Earlier in his speech, Mr. Huang stated that since 2018, India has risen in the global manufacturing sector, offering excellent services that align with international trends and becoming a popular regional manufacturing hub. Taiwan, as a strong player in chip manufacturing, aims to enhance supply chain resilience and is set to collaborate with India to establish a wafer fab, perfectly aligning with the “Make in India” initiative. With Taiwan’s AI prowess, the “Digital India” and “Smart Cities” initiatives will lead Taiwan and India to set new milestones in the global technology manufacturing industry.

As regards Taiwan, Japan and India collaboration in India, he said, “We are trying to foster a trilateral cooperation between Taiwan India and Japanese companies in India. And there are 1700 Japanese companies in India and Taiwan has more than 250 Taiwanese companies and we are hoping to bring them together and work with Indian companies.”

Cynthia Kiang, Director General of TITA pointed out that India is currently the world’s second-largest manufacturer of footwear and textiles. With the global brands’ “China+1” strategy taking effect, India has become a production base for supply chain relocation. This year, TITA introduced an innovative approach of “Cross-Industry Alliances,” integrating petrochemical, machinery, and textile industries for joint marketing promotion. At this Expo, TAITRA and the Taiwan Textile Federation established the “Smart Manufacturing Pavilion” and the ” Sustainable & Innovation Textile Pavilion,” showcasing Taiwan’s intelligent and efficient solutions in petrochemical, shoemaking, and textile processes to demonstrate Taiwan’s industrial energy and capture vast business opportunities in India.

Bau Shuan Ger, Representative of TECC in India, expressed his belief that the longstanding partnership between Taiwan and India will continue to strengthen, further impacting the dynamic global market. Mr. Lalduhawma, Chief Minister of Mizoram State, who attended the opening ceremony, highlighted Taiwan’s role as a significant global industrial hub and emphasized the limitless potential for future bilateral cooperation.

To help more excellent New Taipei City enterprises expand into the Indian market, Chu, Tih-Ju, Deputy Mayor, of New Taipei City Government, and Amy Ho, Commissioner of New Taipei City Government, Economic Development Department led 20 well-known businesses to establish the “New Taipei City Pavilion,” focusing on smart cities, electronics and machinery manufacturing, smart healthcare, and e-sports, targeting India’s industrial needs and green transformation opportunities.

Taiwan Expo 2024 in India, held from July 8 to 10, offers Taiwanese companies a prime opportunity to showcase their top products in New Delhi. This year’s Expo features 12 pavilions across key sectors such as Electronics Manufacturing, Medical and Biotechnology, Smart Lifestyle, Smart Manufacturing, and more, providing an interactive experience with diverse products. The event is 1.6 times larger than last year’s in Mumbai, with enterprise participation nearly back to pre-pandemic levels. Highlight pavilions, organized by Taiwan’s central ministries, local governments, and industry associations, underscore the importance of the Indian market. Notable examples include the Taiwan Visitors Association promoting tourism and the Taipei Computer Association’s Innovation Pavilion showcasing high-tech smart solutions and AIoT products.
