Taiwan to award Rs. 15.2 Cr in scholarships to 117 Indian students 

The MOE Taiwan scholarship is awarded to students wishing to pursue degree courses in Taiwan, at the Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral level. The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is for students wishing to learn the Mandarin language in various universities in Taiwan.

NEW DELHI: Taiwan’s Taipei Economic and Cultural Centre in India (TECC) has selected 117 Indian candidates for the annual Ministry of Education (MOE) Taiwan scholarship and the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship.

The value of the scholarships to be awarded to the students for the year 2021 at Rs. 15 crores is the highest so far. Also, the number of students selected for these scholarships is also highest at 117 this year.

The TECC had awarded Rs. 14.4 crores scholarship to 84 students in 2020, and Rs. 14 crores to 79 students in the previous year 2019

This year the TECC office received 350 applicants for the scholarships out of which 45 candidates were selected for the MOE Taiwan scholarship and 72 students for the Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment scholarship out of 250 applicants.

The scholarship is open for students from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka and is a positive step to help students make their learning experience more convenient, particularly for Indian students. The MOE Taiwan scholarship is awarded to students wishing to pursue degree courses in Taiwan, at the Bachelors, Masters, or Doctoral level. The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship is for students wishing to learn the Mandarin language in various universities in Taiwan.

In terms of distribution of applicants for the Taiwan Scholarship, 42 applicants are from Uttar Pradesh, followed by West Bengal with 31, and the third is Bihar with 27 applicants.

As to the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship, 70 applicants are from New Delhi, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 27 and Bihar with 25 applicants.

If we look at the university distribution, most of the applicants are from the University of Delhi, followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Milia Islamia.

Most Indian students choose National Taiwan University as the top priority to pursue a degree programme, followed by National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and Taipei Medical University.

On the other hand, National Taiwan Normal University is the most favorite university to learn Huayu (Mandarin), followed by National Taiwan University and National Sun Yat-sen University.

Peters Chen, Director of Education Division, Taipei Economic and Cultural Center in India said, “Before obtaining the official award certificate, candidates should submit final admission to Education Division. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, currently, there is border restriction for international students. We hope the restriction will be lifted soon and all candidates shall contact their universities in Taiwan for updated information in the near future.”

“For visa applications, the candidates may follow the latest rules announced by the Taiwanese government by clicking on the link for updates. (https://www.boca.gov.tw/mp-2.html ). When the COVID-19 vaccine is available, I also strongly suggest that candidates complete the required vaccinations and obtain the certificate to minimize the risk of infection. Safety is our top priority, ” he added.

According to the TECC Education Division, Taiwan offers courses in all fields and is quickly becoming one of the top destinations for Indian students wishing to study abroad. Taiwan’s MOE aims to have more academic cooperation with Indian universities and will keep working to further collaborate either through webinars, virtual student exchange programmes, or physical exchange programmes in the future.

Universities or colleges which have set up Taiwan Education Centres (TECs) to have Mandarin courses conducted by Taiwanese teachers will have more comprehensive information of collaboration through the teacher.
