Taiwan yet to open its doors for graduate level medical courses due to limited quota
New Delhi. Already a favorite destination for foreign students pursuing post-graduate and Ph.d level medicine/medical courses, Taiwan is yet to open its doors for graduate level courses due to limited quota in the graduate schools.
At present, only the Master’s and Ph.D. programs of Taiwan’s schools of medicine are currently open to foreign students.
“Taiwan sincerely welcomes all foreign students who seek advanced study. However, medical schools in Taiwan currently do not have any foreign students, including from India, in the department of medicine, due to limited quotas. However, the Master’s and Ph.D. programs of Taiwan’s schools of medicine are open to foreign students to study,” Walter Yeh, President & CEO of Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) told Asian Community News (ACN) Network in an exclusive interview in Delhi.
On the other hand, hospitals in Taiwan train foreign doctors.
Currently, the hospitals accept physicians from India for training programs, including those at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, China Medical University Hospital, and Show Chwan Healthcare System.
When asked about the infrastructure, Walter Yeh said, “Taiwan has 14 hospitals with Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation of America, and these have the international quality of hospitals, expertise, and equipment.”
When it comes to medical tourism, India is the leading destination in the world, said Walter Yeh adding that Taiwan also has some advantages and areas which are like knees replacement, spinal injury, heart diseases, liver transplantation, teeth, eye, and facial treatment, and has a lot of famous doctors besides technology.
“A large number of Indian engineering students are already studying at the Taiwanese universities and after graduation, many of them have been absorbed by Taiwanese companies such as semiconductor companies. They can learn technology and bring back to India in the future. Like our students go to America, and come back after some years when they have experience and start their business in Taiwan, so good for the local industry,” said Walter Yeh.
