Telangana’s Musi riverfront development project to take cues from London, Tokyo, and Seoul
Having studied London’s Thames riverfront for the development of its flagship Musi river project in Hyderabad, a Telengana delegation may soon visit Japan and S Korea to take cues from developed riverfronts there.
HYDERABAD: South Indian state Telengana’s flagship project consisting of development of 57.5 km Musi riverfront as mega economic zone in Hyderabad is drawing inspiration from some of the world’s most successful riverfront models. Aiming to turn the project into a major growth engine for the state and the country alike, the state government is studying various successfully implemented riverfronts across the world.
“Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s vision is not only to make Musi River a live river but also a mega economic zone and economic growth engine. For this, he is going to different countries (to study the successful riverfront models). He has already visited Thames River in London, and soon going to Japan. And if things work out well we will also be visiting S Korea,” Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Minister of Information Technology, Electronics & Communications (ITE&C) and Industries & Commerce (I&C), Telangana, told Asian Community News (ACN) Network recently.
According to the minister CM’s vision for the development alongside the river includes hotels, , schools, residential economic zones, amusement parks, waterfalls, children’s watersports, street vending zones, business area, and shopping malls. Musi River bank is being constructed on the sustainable basis through the 57.5 km stretch in the middle of the city, and experts are being invited for their expertise.
Duddilla Sridhar Babu was addressing a high level Korean delegation during the Korea-India Economic Cooperation Forum organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency), the India-Korea Business Cooperation Center, and the Honorary Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hyderabad with the support of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on June 20, to boost cooperation in various sunrise industries and provided ample opportunities for business networking.
“The government is taking up is the restoration of the Musi River in Hyderabad. Korea is a leading role model for us in urban river rejuvenation. We would like to study and get inspired from your success story in transforming Han River bank in Seoul and we would like to explore opportunities for collaboration and partnerships with Korean companies for Musi Riverfront Development,” he said.
According to experts the development of riverfronts as effective economic zones immensely contributed not only to the region but to the coyuntry’s growth as well. Also known as Hangang River, the Han River of Seoul is the live example of it.

South Korea has achieved economic growth at an unprecedented speed. Observers called what the country has accomplished the “Miracle on the Hangang River”, as most of the country’s industrial facilities were destroyed during the three-year-long Korean War, and the country was devoid of capital and natural resources.
