The Heart of Learning: Social and Emotional learning, the way forward
By Prachi Bakshi, Founder, Roots Educate
I have had the good fortune of studying in some of the best schools (DPS R.K Puram), colleges (Lady Shri Ram College, XIMB), and working with some of the best companies (Google, Deloitte).
One of my strongest learnings and observations has been that success is not determined by academics or your ability to learn or analyse alone. While these aspects have their due importance, it is our behaviour, soft skills, value system, how we respond to people and situations around us is that make all the difference.
Recent research indicates that 80% of engineers do not have the skills to qualify for jobs in the current knowledge economy. The way our students are being taught has remained unchanged at a time when having just technical skills is not enough. The goal of education is to ‘make students ready for life’
But when do we actually learn this? Our education system does a great job making doctors, engineers, scientists but it doesn’t ensure they turn into honest, responsible human beings. I realised that our education system is missing such an important aspect – skills needed for life. With the intention to bridge this crucial gap, I quit my lucrative corporate career and started Roots Educate.
The vision of Roots educate is to bring social and emotional learning to every single child. We invest years to teach each child maths, science, English, history, geography but not all of them end up as historians or mathematicians, or scientists. However, every single child will have to learn how to manage relationships, understand other people’s perspectives, work with ambiguity or diverse environments if needed, and maintain a positive atmosphere. This is the goal of Social and Emotional Learning
Social and Emotional Learning is the process through which children understand and manage their emotions, demonstrate empathy, form healthy relationships, establish positive goals, and make responsible decisions.
At Roots Educate, we have created an extensive curriculum for the holistic development of children. We teach children Empathy, Confidence, Speaking in public, Honesty, Humility, Humor, Being a good friend, Handling and understanding peer pressure, Being responsible, Being disciplined, Decision making, teamwork, resolving conflicts, perseverance, embracing diversity, self-control, and much more.
The age group for the curriculum is 8-12 years. While SEL is a lifelong process, education and awareness about our behaviour and actions must start as early as possible.
The curriculum is taught in an interactive and fun manner using stories, fictional characters, games, group processes, and role-plays to name a few. Parents are seeing a huge impact on their children’s growth and realising the importance of something that cannot be ignored anymore.
“I made a life’s decision for enrolling in these empowering sessions, my son has inculcated all the values and built that never give up attitude in him,” says a parent.
‘Having experienced these classes first hand, I must say that this learning is necessary for kids to develop a strong foundation’, shares another
